«One day in 1896 a group of turks and kurds reached Severek village armed with swords. My great-grandfather tried to defend the church where he lived as security guard. One of the turks hurt him running through his belly and head with the sword. As my grandfather realized about it he ran to assist his father and took him back home. There, my great-grandfather died in his son’s arms. The turk with the sword hurt my grandfather on the head too, while helping his father. This scar has been visible until he died.
Another day, in 1916, during the war, a group of soldiers knocked at my father’s door telling him to leave the house away. The morning after, the whole family started their way to Aleppo by foot, 300 kilometers away. My father’s father died of thirst on the way and they had to abandon him on the road. Finally, my parents met each other in Aleppo and they got married right there. »
